(Excerpt from Colloquia Peripatetica Deep-Sea Soundings: B...)
Excerpt from Colloquia Peripatetica Deep-Sea Soundings: Being Notes of Conversations This volume requires a brief note in explanation. During part of the summers of 1859 and 1860, Dr. Duncan and I lived under the same roof in a seaside Fifeshire village. I was the constant companion of his waking hours. I had just left the philosophical classes of the University, and begun the study of theology; and day by day our conversations turned to those questions where Philosophy and Theology meet: - the relations of the Infinite and finite, the nature of our knowledge of God, the human will in its relation to the Divine, and anthropology generally; - while I was ready, from admiration at once of his intellect, his learning, and his character, to treasure almost everything, he said. Of these conversations I took rapid pencil-notes at the moment, and wrote them out in ink afterwards; and many memorable words fell from his lips during these months of familiar intercourse and discussion. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(In the year 1870, I gave a course of twelve lectures in D...)
In the year 1870, I gave a course of twelve lectures in Dundee, on the subject of Theism. These were mainly historical, and were intended to be wrought out more fully for publication; but the pressure of other interests prevented the completion of this project. Most of the conclusions reached were embodied in an article published in The British Quarterly Review in July 1871, and afterwards included in a volume of Studies in Philosophy and Literature (1879). In 1890 I was asked to give a short course of lectures on the same subject to the Theological Co Uege at Salisbury. These I repeated in London in 1891. In the present volume these lectures are enlarged, with several addenda. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology. Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary thing about the past worth remembering, and that was the fact that it is past and can't be restored." Well, over recent years, The British Library, working with Microsoft has embarked on an ambitious programme to digitise its collection of 19th century books. There are now 65,000 titles available (that's an incredible 25 million pages) of material ranging from works by famous names such as Dickens, Trollope and Hardy as well as many forgotten literary gems , all of which can now be printed on demand and purchased right here on Amazon. Further information on The British Library and its digitisation programme can be found on The British Library website.

(Excerpt from Rectorial Addresses Delivered at the Univers...)
Excerpt from Rectorial Addresses Delivered at the University of St. Andrews: Sir William Stirling-Maxwell, to the Marquess of Bute 1863-1893; Edited With an Introduction The publication of the Rectorial Addresses delivered at the University of St. Andrews, since the passing of the Universities (Scotland) Act of 1858, has often been thought of. The late Principals Tulloch and Shairp were most anxious that it should be undertaken. As more than one-third of a century has elapsed since the passing of the Act, it seems appropriate that the thirteen Addresses, which have been delivered by our eleven Rectors, should now be brought together, and issued in a memorial volume, for the benefit of the University and its students. All the Rectors who still live have cordially consented to the publication of their addresses, and the representatives of those who are dead have done the same. To those who wish to understand the aims and ideals of our Scottish Universities, during the latter half of the nineteenth century, the perusal of these Addresses will be more than interesting, as they discuss some of the deepest educational problems, and deal with others of wide practical significance. It is an honour to the students of the University that such men have been elected to fill the rectorial chair. It may be expedient, in a brief Introduction, to state a few historical facts in reference to the office of Rector; and to add one or two incidents in connection with the elections which have taken place at St. Andrews, during the last thirty years. (Excerpt from Memorials of Thomas Davidson: The Wandering ...)
Excerpt from Memorials of Thomas Davidson: The Wandering Scholar, Collected and Edited Since the following pages were written a book entitled The Education of the Wage-Earners, a Contribution toward the Solution of the Educational Problem of Democracy, by Thomas Davidson, has been edited by his student-friend, Professor Charles M. Bakewell of Yale University, and published by Messrs. Ginn & Company. It is a distinctive memorial of Davidson's work, especially in the closing years of his life; but it does not render the present volume inopportune, nor does it in any way supersede it. Both have the same end in view, namely, the memorialization of the life and work of a very remarkable man, - rare at any time, and more especially rare as the years advance, - a unique teacher of the nineteenth century, who sowed seed which is even now yielding a rich harvest. It may be well to state in a paragraph what Mr. Bakewell has done in his little book for the memory of our common friend. He first gives a comprehensive introductory sketch of David son and his philosophy. He then inserts an address on "The Task of the Nineteenth Century," given by Mr. Davidson be fore the Educational Alliance of New York in 1898, and first published in the International Journal of Ethics in October, 1901. His third chapter contains a very interesting statement, also by Mr. Davidson, on "The Educational Problem which the Nineteenth Century hands over to the Twentieth"; while the fourth contains "The History of the Experiment." His fifth chapter is, however, by far the most valuable in the volume. It is entitled "The Underlying Spirit (of the experiment) as shown by the Weekly Letters to the Class." Since the following pages were written a book entitled The Education of the Wage-E arners a Contribution toward the Solution of the Educational Problem of Democracy by Thomas Davidson, has been edited by his student-friend, Professor Charles M. Bakewell of Yale University, and published by Messrs. Ginn Company. It is a distinctive memorial of Davidson swork, especially in the closing years of his life; but it does not render the present volume inopportune, nor does it in any way supersede it. Both have the same end in view, namely, the memorialization of the life and work of a very remarkable man, rare at any time, and more especially rare as the years advance, a unique teacher of the nineteenth century, who sowed seed which is even now yielding a rich harvest. It may be well to state in a paragraph what Mr. Bakewell has done in his Uttle book for the memory of our common friend. He first gives a comprehensive introductory sketch of Davidson and his philosophy. He then inserts an address on The Task of the Nineteenth Century, given by Mr. Davidson before the Educational Alliance of New York in 1898, and first published in the International Journal of Ethics in October, 1901. His third chapter contains a very interesting statement, also by Mr. Davidson, on The Educational Problem which the Nineteenth Century hands over to the Twentieth ;while the fourth contains The History of the Experiment. His fifth chapter is, however, by far the most valuable in the volmne. It is entitled The Underlying Spirit (of the experiment) as shown by the Weekly Letters to the Class.

Excerpt from Letters of the Wordsworth Family, Vol. 1 of 3: From 1787 to 1855, Collected and Edited No one can regret more than I do the long delay in the publication of these Letters of the Wordsworth Family, since the year (1895) in which I undertook, and began in 1896, the preparation of the Poems of Wordsworth for the Eversley edition of the Messrs. Macmillan. It was originally intended that a selection of the poet's Letters should be issued in one or two volumes, after the completion of the Poems, the Prose Works, and the Journals of Dorothy Wordsworth, in the twelve volumes of that edition. For reasons which it is unnecessary to explain, that intention was not carried out, but the collection of Letters was continued and extended. It was limited at first to those of the poet and his sister; but afterwards enlarged by the inclusion of others written by Wordsworth's brother, wife, and daughter, as well as by his sister-in-law Sarah Hutchinson, and his son-in-law Edward Quillinan. As the work progressed, it became increasingly evident that no new Life of Wordsworth was needed other than that supplied by the letters of the family. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated.1891 Excerpt: ... In his Emotions and the Will (1859) and in his Mental and Moral Science (1868) Professor Alexander Bain has discussed the subject of the "aesthetic emotions." He defines them as "the group of feelings involved in the various Fine Arts." They have three characteristics--(1) they have pleasure for their immediate end; (2) they have no disagreeable accompaniments; (3) their enjoyment is not restricted to one or two, but can be shared by many. The eye and the ear are the two senses through which aesthetic pleasure reaches us; but what appeals to the other senses, and reaches us through them, may also become the subject of Art, by being idealised. The source of beauty is not one single quality, but many qualities. What may come within the domain of Fine Art are--(1) the emotions of eye and ear, in their elements; (2) the intellectual resuscitation of them, other senses co-operating in their revival; (3) the special emotions, wonder, surprise, novelty, etc.; (4) Harmony. Mr. Bain next discusses, with some repetition, the pleasurable emotions of sound, with their harmonies, and the pleasurable sensations of sight, with their harmonies; proceeding thence to complex harmonies, fitness of means to ends, and unity in diversity. He then considers the sublime as a sentiment due to the disclosure of power, and gives an epitome of theories of the Beautiful. It is to be noted, in reference to the three characteristics of aesthetic pleasure mentioned by Mr. Bain, and especially in reference to the third of them, which Aristotle signalised so well--viz. its disinterestedness, or its being sharable by others--that this is not peculiar to aesthetic pleasure. It is a characteristic of all intellectual life, of scientific knowledge, and of moral as well as of aesthetic pleasure....
