LOCKHART, James Haldane Stewart was born on May 26, 1858 in Ardsheal, Argyllshire. 4th son of Miles Lockhart ($. of James Lockhart of Lanhams, Essex, and Lord of the Manor of Marston and Oving, Buckinghamshire), and of Anna R. C. Stewart, daughter of Major Stewart, 91st Regiment, and niece of Charles Stewart, late of Ardsheal, male representative of the Stewarts of Lome, Appin, and Ardsheal.
Education
Studied at King William’s College, Isle of Man. Watson’s College, Edinburgh (gold medallist). Edinburgh University (Greek Medallist).
Career
Appointed, after competitive examination, a Hong Kong cadet, 1878. Attached to the Colonial Office for one year. Appointed Superintendent Opium Revenue, Hong Kong, 1883.
AM.L.C. 1888; aM.E.C. 1891. Special Commissioner to Inspect and Report on the Extension of the Colony of Hong Kong, 1898. Received the thanks of His (or Her) Majesty Government for the manner in which he discharged his mission, 1898.
Representative of Great Britain to delimit the boundaries of the extension of Hong Kong. Thanked for services by His (or Her) Majesty Government, 1899. Decorated for general services. ; His (or Her) Majesty’s Commissioner Weihai-wei since 1902.
