Eton. Gazette 24 May 1839, 2nd Lieutenant 5th Fusiliers, served with them 26 years in Ionian Islands, Gibraltar, Mauritius, and India during the Mutiny. Was present in the action of Marigunge and relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde in 1857.
Commanded detachment of 5th Fusiliers with the advance guard on the Dilkooslia and Martinij&re. In despatches; Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel and a year’s service. With Outranks force at the Alumbagh during succeeding months, including capture of Lucknow.
Also the Oude campaign, 1858-1859.
Capture of Forts Shunkerpore, Amatee, Oomrea, and action of Doundiakeira, where commanded advance guard of 5th Fusiliers (medal, two clasps, and Companion of the Bath). In 1848 at Mauritius, was upset in a boat off Mahebourg, together with five officers, who were saved by his swimming, for which the Royal Humane Society conferred on him its gold medal.
Retired on half-pay in 1866. Justice of the Peace London and Middlesex.
Appointed Major His (or Her) Majesty Tower of London by the Constable Field-Marshal Sir John Burgovne, Baronet., Knight Grand Cross of the Bath, 27 August 1870.
