BOISGUILBERT, Pierre Le Pesant, Sieur de was born in 1646 in Normandy, France.
Though much concerned
with workaday economic facts and policy, he soon developed deeper theoretical interests. From his country home in Normandy he developed the idea, which was to take on central importance for the physiocrats, that agriculture was the most essential sector of the economy and should be given preference over the demands of manufacturing. To this end he advocated high prices for agricultural products, leading to a rural population with a greater capacity to consume goods and a swifter circulation of money.
His policy propositions were probably easy to disregard because of his exaggerated claims for them, but he can be seen with hindsight as a major contributor to the development of macroeconomic theory in the early eighteenth century.
Landowner and member, Noblesse de la robe.
