Background
LAW, John was born in 1671 in Edinburgh, Scotland.
(First published anonymously in 1705, Money and Trade Cons...)
First published anonymously in 1705, Money and Trade Considered With a Proposal for Supplying the Nation with Money is arguably one of the most influential texts in economic and financial history. It would foreshadow the extraordinary life and career of John Law of Lauriston who would transcend his origins as a murderer, philanderer and gambler to become the most revered financial genius in Europe. Written to prompt political and economic change in Scotland, Money and Trade Considered introduced the public to John Law’s proposals for establishing new systems of banking and paper money. A pioneering work of staggering originality and clarity, it revealed Law’s formulation of several of the most significant economic concepts ever devised.

LAW, John was born in 1671 in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Promoted various schemes for banks, beginning in 1702 with a proposal for a Bank of France. The schemes involved the creation of paper money backed by land holdings, which he argued would stimulate economic activity. In 1716 he was permitted to set up
his General Bank in France, and in the following year his company of the West began to sell stock in France’s North American possession of Louisiana and Mississippi, His financial influence grew to a peak with his appointment as Minister of Finance in 1720.
His belief that shares of stock were identical with money led to mistakes in the management of the speculative ‘bubble’ which followed. Law’s system collapsed and he was permanently discredited, his name becoming almost synonymous with cranky monetary panaceas. Banker, merchant and
statesman.
