Wilkes graduated from college in Missouri in 1852.
Peter Wiles lived in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri, before the Civil War. There is some evidence that he practiced law.
When the Civil War began, he volunteered as a private in the 1st Missouri Infantry. No record exists of his military career. He was elected to the second Confederate House from Missouri’s Sixth Congressional District, and he served on the Indian Affairs and Post Office Committees.
He was also a member of the select committee on the claims of the stales in February 1865.
Wilkes moved to Stockton, California, and became a successful lawyer. He made a partnership with David S. Terry.
Wilkes generally supported the Davis administration.
Peter was married to Sarah Minerva Bradford.
