From 1970 to 1975 Sergei Nikolaevich Martynov studied at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations.
From 1975 to 1976 Sergei Nikolaevich Martynov served as the third secretary at the Ministry Foreign Affairs in Minsk, Belarus, and the second secretary from 1976 to 1977, an assistant to foreign minister from 1978 to 1988, a deputy director from 1988 to 1990. From 1991 to 1992 he served as a deputy permanent representative at the Mission to United Nations in New York City. From 1992 to 1993 Martynov was a chargé d'affaires at Belarus Embassy in Washington, District of Columbia.
From 1993 to 1997 Martynov worked as an ambassador to the United States at Belarus Embassy in Washington, District of Columbia. Since 1997 he has served as the first deputy foreign minister at the Government of Belarus in Minsk. He also served as ambassador to Belgium, the European Union and to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) between 2001 and 2003. He was appointed to the post of Foreign Minister of Belarus in March 2003 and dismissed in August 2012.
