Butter, a professor, studied poets that used symbolism and mysticism in the works of including Yeats, Shelley, and Francis Thompson. However, Butter's principal research focused on the poet Edwin Muir. Butter served in World War II after studying at the college level. He lectured at Edinburgh University and later took a professorship at Glasgow University. Butter's editorial work and style of writing purposefully drew more attention to his subject than to himself.
