( At once memoir and meditation, Keeping Time records one...)
At once memoir and meditation, Keeping Time records one professional historian’s struggle to live in history even as he studies it, writes about it, and teaches it. Exploring the omnipresence of the past in American life today, Peter N. Carroll weaves into his autobiographical narrative a wealth of provocative observations on the practice of history, the connections between “small” lives and large forces, and the relationship of personal choice to public activity. Carroll feels compelled to view the past in a different way—not as something remote from the present, but as a vital current in everyone’s life. He strives to popularize history, reminding us that the particulars of ordinary life are indeed historical, that all human beings, however “obscure” or “important,” exist in time, and that each must live in history.

(During the year 2125, former asteroid miners Max Cody and...)
During the year 2125, former asteroid miners Max Cody and Elaine Zhou never get a moment’s rest. No sooner have they doused the flames of war between Earth and Mars or returned from their first trip to the Tavern on the Edge of Time when they are called upon to help fit out the fledging Martian colony orbiting Jupiter’s moon Callisto. In parallel, Earth extradites the war’s fomenter, ex-billionaire arms merchant Xanthus Rex, hoping to gain from his insights into Martian teleportation technology, but he manages to turn Earth’s resources toward private revenge against Max, Mars, and the Callisto Colony. In the meantime aliens are leaking into the Earth-Mars continuum from the Tavern, whose proprietor repaired and upgraded Max after accidentally injuring him during an asteroid mining expedition. Max’s enhancements help, of course, but when strange beings with the power to animate matter—the Assemblers—find their way to Earth, Max, Mars, and humanity are sorely beset. Worse yet, the Tavern itself is becoming unstable, its acquisitive host having overstretched his considerable powers. His prospecting for collapsed neutron matter has also opened portals between continua, inadvertently adding still more aliens to the mix. That’s when the Assemblers’ overlord arrives and Max finally meets his match. Oh, and Elaine is expecting their hybrid baby. Yes, you might say these are difficult times at the Tavern on the Edge of Time.

(In 2125 mankind populates Mars, harvests the metallic ric...)
In 2125 mankind populates Mars, harvests the metallic riches of the asteroid belt, and flings the ore-bearing asteroids back to smelters near Mars for processing. Mars’ economic might grows daily as mining on Earth becomes uneconomic. The Martian Republic wins autonomy and begins to look to the stars — all the more so as Martian scientists on Phobos have developed the first practical teleportation technology, albeit with one major drawback. While preparing an asteroid for its trip in-system, Max Cody is wounded and repaired by aliens from another continuum. His repair brings him exotic capabilities, which he employs desperately as renegade ice pirates threaten the embryonic Martian Republic while their allies on the inside plot to take both Mars and Earth hostage. The only upside may be Max’s budding relationship with his alluring navigator and colleague, Elaine Zhou. Can Max thwart the murderous plans of Suicide Sam, uncover the plot in time, and still protect his new love? Max wonders, too, whether he is up to this challenge.

(In 2125 Earth grows weary of Mars' economic might and thr...)
In 2125 Earth grows weary of Mars' economic might and threatens a war to gain access to the mineral wealth of the asteroid belt, but even more importantly to Mars' promising teleportation technology. Fresh from resolving the highjacked Mars Orbital Smelter Array crisis, Max Cody is confronted with new challenges as he and his amour Elaine join the diplomatic mission to Earth aimed at preventing war. Damaged and repaired by aliens, Max brings special capabilities to the table which he will desperately need as diplomacy stumbles. Earth's forces threaten to launch a powerful strike at the tiny Martian colony, driven by the relentless ambition of Xanthus Rex, the billionaire arms merchant. Imprisoned on Mauritius, Max and Elaine are helpless to prevent the war between worlds unfolding overhead. How will they escape, and what can even they do to forestall catastrophe for their friends near Mars? Frankly, Max and Elaine wonder, too.

Fonda, Peter was born on February 23, 1939 in New York City. The son of Henry, younger brother of Jane, and father of Bridget.
Studied at the University Omaha.
He directed and acted in Wanda Nevada (78); and acted in The Hostage Tower (80, Claudio Guzman); The Cannonball Ran (81, Hal Needham); as a cult leader in Split Image (82, Ted Kotcheff); Dance of the Dwarfs (82, (ins Trikonis); Spasms (83, William Fruet); Peppennint Frieden (84, Marianne Rosenbaum); A Reason to Live (84, Peter Levin); Certain Funy (85, Stephen Gyllenhaal); Hawkens Breed (89, Charles B. Pierce); and The Rose Garden (89, Fons Rademakers).
The easygoing indifference of Fondas acting went on for a few more years—with Fatal Mission (90, George Rowe), which he cowrote; South Beach (92, Fred Williamson); Deadfall (93, Christopher Coppola); Molly & Gina (93, Paul Leder); Nadja (94, Michael Almerevda); Love and a .45 (94, C. M. Talkington); Escape from LA. (96, John Carpenter). Most of those got and deserved a limited release. But then Fonda delivered a very good performance in Ulee’s Gold (97, Victor Nunez), which got a nomination. Since then, he was good as the smooth heel in The Limey (99, Steven Soderbergh); The Passion of Ayn Rand (99, Christopher Menaul); South of Heaven. West of Hell (00, Dwight Yoakam); Second Skin (00, Darrell Roodt); Wooly Boys (01, Leszek Burzynski); The Laramie Project (02, Moises Kaufman).

Peter still walks and moves like Henry: shoulders drooping, flat-footed, seeming to be propelled from the knee joints. And, like his father, Peter lias that coltish, humorless idealism of a young Mr. Lincoln or Tom Joad. Jane alone seems anxious about life; Henrv and Peter address it, as if it were a jury or a political meeting. Thus, even the supposed modernity of Easy Rider (69, Dennis Hopper) fits into the American legend of its own idealism that Henry had done so much to incarnate.
It is as elaborate and artificial a piece of “realism” as all those films Henrv made for John Ford, and as simplistic as Twelve Angry Men. Easy Rider was also part produced by Fonda, with great profit. That is another subtle compromise, for its apparent underground movie was as glossy and expensive as the streamlined motorbikes, and nearly as roadworthy. Nevertheless, Fonda is an interesting figure—an actor of handsome nobility, and a director of muddled plainness, for instance, The Hired Hand (71). His record as an actor is already very varied: Tammy and the Doctor (63, Harry Keller); The Victors (63, Carl Foreman); especially good as the neurotic admirer of Lilith (63, Robert Rossen); The Young Lovers (64, Samuel Goldwyn Jr.); The Rounders (65, Burt Kennedy); The Wild Angels (66, Roger Corman); The Trip (67, Corman); in the "Metzengerstein episode from Histoires Extraordinaires (68. Roger Vadim); The Last Movie (71, Hopper); Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (74, John Hough); Race with the Devil (75, Jack Starrett); The Diamond Mercenaries (75, Val Guest); 92 in the Shade (75, Thomas McGuane); Fighting Mad (76, Jonathan Demme); Futureworld (76. Richard T. Heffron); and Outlaw Blues (77, Heffron).
Married Susan Brewer, October 8, 1961 (divorced April 1972). 2 children; Married Portia Rebecca Crockett, November 11, 1975.
