Sylvester Stallone's father was an Italian emigrant, from Gioia del Colle, Apulia and is is of French (from Brittany) and Ukrainian-Jewish (from Odessa) descent.. His maternal grandmother was French, with Breton ancestry.
Sylvester Stallone was born in a charity hospital on July 6, 1946, in New York City, New York, the United States, to Jackie Stallone (née Labofish), an astrologer, dancer, and promoter of women's wrestling, and Frank Stallone, a beautician, and hairdresser. His younger brother is actor and musician Frank Stallone. His father moved the family to Washington, D.C. in the early 1950s to open a beauty school. In 1954, his mother opened a women's gym called Barbella's.
Up until he was about five, Stallone spent a lot of time in the foster system. His parents fought a lot and ignored Stallone and his brother. He’s said that his attempts to get his many foster parents to show affection towards him was one reason he got into acting. Stallone was eleven when his parents divorced and entered his teens shuttling back and forth between their homes. He finally settled in Philadelphia after his mother remarried and relocated there.
In 1958, walking out of a movie theatre after having watched bodybuilder Steve Reeves in Hercules, the 12-year-old Sly couldn’t believe what he had just seen. He said to himself, “Sly do you want to be a bum or be like Steve Reeves?” He chose the latter and from that early age developed a keen interest in bodybuilding.
Education
Stallone's rebellious nature led to his expulsion from several local high schools, following which he was admitted to Devereux-Manor Hall - a special secondary school for problem boys. Once enrolled, however, he became a star fullback on the football team, set track and field records, won championships in fencing as well as equestrian conquests. He expanded his interests to include drama activities during his summer holidays. Stallone also attended Notre Dame Academy and Lincoln High School in Philadelphia, as well as Charlotte Hall Military Academy.
He was accepted for admission by the American College of Switzerland where he soon developed a passion for acting, and later returned to the United States to continue his studies at the University of Miami as a drama major. He left the University three credits short of his degree to pursue a professional acting career in New York.
After Stallone's request that his acting and life experiences be accepted in exchange for his remaining needed college credits to graduate, he was granted a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree by the president of the University of Miami in 1999.
Stallone managed to land a few off-Broadway roles and commercial assignments during his first four years as an actor. Unable to find steady work as a performer, Stallone then turned his creative energies to writing. He also made an appearance in an adult film called The Party at Kitty and Stud's (1970). A few uncredited parts in mainstream films, such as Woody Allen’s Bananas (1971) and Klute (1971), soon followed. He had a more substantial role-playing a tough guy in the 1974 independent film The Lords of Flatbush with Henry Winkler and Perry King.
An unexpected acting assignment in The Lords of Flatbush film provided him with enough money to move to Los Angeles, where he landed small roles in several television series and motion pictures to subsidize his writing endeavors.
His 29th birthday marked a major turning point in his writing. Inspired by the Muhammad Ali/Chuck Wepner fight (in which Wepner, a little known club fighter, became one of the few men ever to go fifteen rounds with Ali), Stallone realized that dignity could be a greater prize than a title.
And so, Rocky Balboa was born. Injected with Stallone’s own experience as a down-and-out artist, the character grew into a screenplay, and ultimately, into the Oscar-winning Best Picture of 1976 - Rocky. Stallone went on to direct the series the next three sequels, an anthology that ranks as one of the most successful in the history of MGM/UA.
Released in 1976 and directed by John G. Avildsen, Rocky became a critical and commercial hit. The film went on to earn 10 Academy Award nominations, including nods for best actor, director, and picture. Rocky faced stiff competition in the best picture category from such films as Taxi Driver, All the President’s Men and Network, but it proved to be the small film with a powerful punch and nabbed the coveted Oscar. The story of Rocky Balboa, the quintessential underdog, also struck a chord with moviegoers and earned the film more than $117 million at the box office.
To follow up on his breakthrough role, Stallone next starred as a labor organizer in F.I.S.T. (1978). He received some favorable reviews for his work, but the film failed to attract much of an audience. Returning to the film that made him famous, Stallone wrote, directed and starred in Rocky II (1979). He kept the franchise going a few years later with Rocky III (1982).
That same year, Stallone introduced a new character to moviegoers - John Rambo, a disenfranchised and troubled Vietnam vet - in First Blood (1982). Rambo ends up going to war with the police in a small town after being mistreated by authorities. Once again, Stallone struck box-office gold. He went behind the scenes for his next effort, Staying Alive (1983), which he wrote and directed. Although the film featured John Travolta reprising his breakout role from Saturday Night Fever (1977), it did not fare as well as the original.
Trying to branch out as an actor, Stallone starred opposite Dolly Parton in the comedy Rhinestone (1984). The film was a commercial and critical failure. Fans lined up more so to see Stallone taking up trademark roles in Rocky IV (1985), Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), Rambo III (1988) and Rocky V (1990). He also starred in the comedy Oscar (1991) as well as the futuristic action flick Demolition Man (1993), which co-starred Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock.
By the mid-1990s, Stallone’s star power as an action hero had started to fade. He made a series of forgettable films, including Judge Dredd (1995) and Daylight (1996). Taking a break from big-budget action films, Stallone took a supporting role in the independent drama Cop Land (1997), which starred Harvey Keitel, Robert De Niro, and Ray Liotta. He earned strong reviews for his portrayal of a sheriff in a small New Jersey town largely inhabited by New York City cops.
Returning to his leading man status, Stallone starred in the crime thriller Get Carter (2000), which received mixed reviews. He then wrote, co-produced and starred in the car-racing drama Driven (2001). It netted more than $32 million at the box office - a long way from his glory days of Rocky. Another effort, Shade (2004), came and went without much notice.
Stallone once again returned to familiar territory to write another chapter of his most popular creation. The plot of Rocky Balboa (2006) mirrored Stallone’s own career to some extent. The former heavyweight champion, long retired, decides to go for one more big fight. “Things really started to slow down for me about 10 years ago, and I had a lot of time for introspection. ... It is kind of bittersweet. That is why I wanted to write this film. If I had been cranking out films, very successful ones, I wouldn’t have done this one,” Stallone explained to People magazine in 2007. Fans turned out in droves to see Rocky’s final fight, which earned more than $70 million at the domestic box office and an additional $85 million in foreign sales.
Stallone then reprised his other action persona, John Rambo. In addition to playing the lead, he wrote and directed Rambo (2008). The film lived up to the gory legacy of its predecessors. As one Entertainment Weekly critic described it, the film “is up to its boot tops in numbing violence.” Still, Rambo was able to attract enough moviegoers to bring in $42.7 million at the box office.
In 2010, Stallone starred alongside Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Expendables. The ensemble cast also featured Jason Statham of The Transporter film series, mixed martial arts fighter Randy Couture and martial arts expert Jet Li. In addition to his performance in the film, Stallone served as director and screenwriter. A sequel, The Expendables 2 was released August 17, 2012, to a positive critical reception of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, as opposed to the original's 41%.
In 2013, Stallone starred in the action film Bullet to the Head, directed by Walter Hill, based upon Alexis Nolent's French graphic novel Du Plomb Dans La Tete. Also in 2013, he starred in the action thriller Escape Plan, along with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Caviezel, and in the sports comedy Grudge Match alongside Robert De Niro.
The Expendables 3, the third installment in the ensemble action film series was released on August 15, 2014. The returning ensemble cast also added Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, and Harrison Ford. This film was negatively received by both critics and audiences and became the lowest-grossing film in the series.
In 2015, Stallone reprised his role as Rocky Balboa in a spin-off-sequel film, Creed, which focused on Adonis Creed, the son of his deceased friend/rival, Apollo Creed, becoming a boxer, played by Michael B. Jordan. The film, directed by Ryan Coogler, received critical acclaim. Portraying the iconic cinematic boxer for the seventh time in a span of 40 years, Stallone's portrayal of the character received widespread acclaim and accolades, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, and his third Academy Award nomination; this time for Best Supporting Actor.
In 2017 Stallone appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as Stakar Ogord / Starhawk, the leader of a Ravagers faction. In 2018, he co-starred in Escape Plan 2: Hades with Dave Bautista. By July 2017, Stallone announced that he had finished a script for a sequel to Creed, with a plot including the return of Ivan Drago from Rocky IV. Creed II went into production in March 2018.
In May 2018 the fifth installment in the Rambo franchise was announced and in August 2018 Adrian Grunberg was confirmed as the director. Rambo: Last Blood began filming by September 2018, with a script co-written by Stallone, who also reprises his role as Vietnam War veteran John Rambo. The plot centers around Rambo infiltrating a Mexican drug cartel to rescue a family friend's daughter. The film is scheduled for a September 20, 2019 release in the United States.

Religion
Stallone was baptized and grew up Catholic, but temporarily stopped attending church after he became a successful actor. Later, he rediscovered his childhood faith, when his daughter was born ill in 1996, and he again became a strict Catholic.
In 2006, Stallone stated that the Rocky films were based on Christian ideals: "This is a story of faith, integrity, and victory. Jesus is the inspiration for anyone to go the distance. You could compare his courage to that of David, who as the epic underdog, defeated the giant Goliath in battle…" In late 2006, the actor was interviewed by Pat Robertson from the CBN's The 700 Club. Stallone stated that before in Hollywood, temptation abounded and he had "lost his way", but later put things "in God's hands".
But as of a 2010 interview, Stallone said: “I’m certainly not an Atheist. I was baptized Catholic, but I don’t belong to a structured church. I have no opposition to it. I think there’s great nuggets of knowledge in there, some wonderful rules to live by.”
Politics
Stallone has officially endorsed every Republican presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan. In 1985, Stallone personally meet with Reagan, who endorsed Rocky IV and Rambo: First Blood II, for its being an inspiration to and symbol of the U.S. Army.
In 1994, Stallone contributed $1,000 to the campaign of then-Congressman Rick Santorum, who was then running for the United States Senate in Pennsylvania.
Despite his long association with the Republican Party, Stallone supported President Bill Clinton during his impeachment trial and hosted a Democratic fundraiser at his Miami home on 9 July 1998.
In 2008, Stallone endorsed John McCain for that year's presidential election. In the 2016 election, he described Donald Trump as a "Dickensian character" and "larger than life," but did not endorse him or any candidate in that year's Republican primary.
Views
In 1998, following the murder of his friend Phil Hartman, Stallone, then living in England, called for America to ban all guns. This caused some controversy since he had used guns in many of his movies. Stallone is an advocate for gun control and has been described as "the most anti-gun person working in Hollywood today".
In December 2016, he declined an offer to become Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts, citing a desire to work on issues related to veterans.
Along with Jon Voight and Paula Abdul, he took part in a fundraising, solidarity concert for the besieged Israeli city of Sderot, which has been hit by more than 7,000 Kassam rockets in the past seven years.
Quotations:
"Once in one's life, for one mortal moment, one must make a grab for immortality; if not, one has not lived."
"Until America, door to door takes every handgun, this is what you're gonna have. It's pathetic. It really is pathetic. It's sad. We're living in the Dark Ages over there. It has to be stopped, and someone really has to go on the line, a certain dauntless political figure, and say, "It's ending, it's over, all bets are off." It's not 200 years ago, we don't need this anymore, and the rest of the world doesn't have it. Why should we?"
"95% of the time, women are right. They can be emotional, but when they say your shoes are shit or your tie is wrong, they're often right."
"I am not the richest, smartest or most talented person in the world, but I succeed because I keep going and going and going."
Personality
A young Sly thought himself a superhero, and, a la Clark Kent, he wore a superhero costume under his regular clothes. He tried jumping out a window once to test his flight skills, deciding to use an umbrella to help slow down his fall. It didn’t work, and he broke his collarbone as a result.
He was bullied in school, so he decided he needed to bulk up. Because the weights were too expensive, he got a little creative with what he used: car parts from the junkyard. He also used cinderblocks attached to a pole to build his muscles.
School wasn’t exactly his thing. By the time he turned 13, he had already been kicked out of 14 schools for being antisocial and because of his violent behavior. He was voted most likely to end up in an electric chair at one point, too. His mom ended up shipping him off to school in Switzerland so that he could continue his education.
Before he made “Rocky,” Stallone was so desperate that he had to sell his pet dog for just $50. But within just a week, with the money from the Rocky script, he got his pet back paying $3000. “I sold my bull-mastiff Butkus to a little person,” Stallone said. “You can’t use the word ‘dwarf’ anymore? Let’s just say a little person. I tied my dog up at the store with a sign that said a hundred bucks. I got $50 from this guy called Little Jimmy. When I sold the Rocky script, I went to see Little Jimmy and begged for the dog back. He lined up his children, ‘Oh my kids love the dog’. I said, ‘You’ve only had him for a f***ing week.’ He wanted to fight me and said he was gonna kill me - he was a crazy little person. I couldn’t fight him, they’d arrest me, so I offered to pay double. Anyway, $3000 and several threats later…”
Stallone has his fears, and he’s got to live them out on screen. His fear of heights caught up to him while filming Cliffhanger, where part of the shoot took place in the Dolomite mountains. He also had to address his claustrophobia for Daylight, where he did a lot of filming in a small and enclosed tunnel.
Physical Characteristics:
Stallone was born with the lower side of his face paralyzed as the obstetricians tried to use a pair of forceps to pull him out of his mother’s womb. This seriously severed a nerve that caused a permanent deformity in the lower parts of his lip, tongue, and chin, and left his facial muscles partially paralyzed for life.

Stallone had ended his relationship with Jennifer Flavin via FedEx after Dickinson gave birth to her daughter Savannah in February 1994. It was reported that Stallone was the father, and Savannah was given his surname at birth. They split up when Stallone discovered he was not the father of her daughter. In 1995, Stallone was briefly engaged to model Angie Everhart before rekindling his relationship with Flavin.
