Peter Gowland learned about lighting and cameras while working as an extra in the film industry. He also studied with Jack Thomas, a Hollywood portrait photographer.
Self-employed since 1947, Peter Gowland was in the Air Force from 1945 to 1946 and was a movie extra from 1933 to 1943. In 1957 he designed and manufactured the Gowlandflex twin-lens camera. As a cinematographer he has worked for Wide World of Sports and also made the films Save Our Stream (1965) and Save Our Beach (1968).
Peter Gowland died of surgical complications after fracturing his hip.
Peter Gowland invented elite cameras and equipment that he used to shoot pinups and magazine covers. In the late 1950s, Gowland also invented the twin-lens Gowlandflex camera, which used 4-by-5 inch film for high-quality pictures. The camera has since been used by such photographers as Annie Leibovitz and Yousuf Karsh.
