Peter Graffam Davis was born on May 3, 1936, Concord, Massachusetts, United States, and grew up in nearby Lincoln and Cambridge.
Davis graduated from Harvard College in 1958 with a major in music. He then studied composition at the Stuttgart Hochschule für Musik before undertaking further post-graduate work at Columbia University. At Columbia, he studied under Jack Beeson and Otto Luening and in 1962 received his Master of Arts degree in composition.
By 1967 Peter Davis had already been the music editor of High Fidelity and Musical America as well as the New York music correspondent for The Times of London. Two years later, he started his long relationships with the New York Times as a staff writer and then as a music critic, holding this position till 2007, when the magazine eliminated the post. Currently, Peter Davis is retired and works as a freelance editor and journalist.
During his career, Davis also wrote for Musical America and Opera News among other publications.
Music critic Peter G. Davis has established a reputation for expressing strong opinions during his years on the staff of the New York Times and, later, at New York magazine. Davis’s special interest is in opera and singing, and he is particularly known as the author of the book, The American Opera Singer: The Lives and Adventures of America’s Great Singers in Opera and Concert, from 1825 to the Present (1997), where he discusses the history of American opera.
