He is a native of Adelaide, Australia. Hartung assumed the role of director of the Institute, following the incarceration of Doctor Gerald Fredrick Töben at Mannheim Prison for breaching Germany"s Holocaust Law, Section 130, that prohibits anyone from "defaming the dead".
