Career
He is currently Professor of English Literature at the University of East Anglia, having moved there from the University of Dundee in 2013. His doctoral thesis at the University of Hull was on "The Seventeenth-century Influence on the Early Religious and Political Thought of South. T. Coleridge, 1790-1805". Kitson has authored and edited many books and many articles on Romantic era literature, and has specialised in theories of race, slavery, and empire in the period.
His publications include the important Slavery, Abolition and Emancipation: Writings in the British Romantic Period, which provided modern readers with a substantial body of eighteenth-century writings about race and slavery.
Kitson has served as President of the English Association (2007-2010) and President of the British Association for Romantic Studies (2007-2011). He is an Honorary Fellow of the English Association.
