Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Lourie graduated from Collegiate School in New York City in 1971. He received his bachelor’s degree in classics from New York University in 1975 and went to graduate school at the University of Maine, where he received his Master of Arts in English Literature and then on to Columbia University where he received an Master of Fine Arts in nonfiction writing.
