Peter S. Lynch is an American investor, mutual fund manager, and philanthropist. He also co-authored a number of books and papers on investing and coined a number of well known mantras of modern individual investing strategies, such as "Invest in what you know and ten bagger".
Background
Peter S. Lynch was born in 1944 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Son of Thomas Lynch. In 1951, when Lynch was seven, his father was diagnosed with cancer. He died three years later, and Lynch's mother had to work to support the family.
Education
Peter received his Bachelor of Arts from Boston College in 1965. In 1968 he received his Master of Business Administration from the University of Pennsylvania.
Career
Lynch served for the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970. He worked for Fidelity Investments, Boston from 1969 to 1990 in various positions. Later, he was a manager of Fidelity Magellan Fund, between 1977 and 1990. Lynch was a trustee of Fidelity Investments since 1990. Besides, he was a member of board of directors of Morrison Knudsen, W.R. Grace. He also lectured at Boston College and was a financial advisor to funds and foundations.
Achievements
As the manager of the Magellan Fund at Fidelity Investments between 1977 and 1990, Lynch averaged a 29.2% annual return, consistently more than doubling the S&P 500 market index and making it the best performing mutual fund in the world. During his tenure, assets under management increased from $18 million to $14 billion. He was named to National Business Hall of Fame.
Peter has been a financial advisor of Lynch Fund, a member of Boston Public Library, Third Century Foundation, Order of Malta, Catholic Schools Foundation (chairman) and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
