Peter Frederick Rothermel was born in Nescopeck, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, the son of Peter Rothermel, a native of northwestern Pennsylvania and a descendant of early settlers.
Young Rothermel received a common school education, supplemented, at the insistence of his father, by the study of surveying but at twenty years of age, following his own inclination, went to Philadelphia and became a sign painter. A few years later, through the influence of a friend, James McMurtrie, he began the study of drawing under John R. Smith, but before the end of his first quarter of tuition, enrolled in the classes of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He studied subsequently under Bass Otis, the teacher of Inman.
For a time the young painter worked at portraits, but his first success came with the painting of "De Soto Discovering the Mississippi, " which was purchased by the Art Union. Edward Carey, a patron, advised him to go abroad, but Rothermel refused to leave his old mother, and argued his conviction that all Americans went to Europe too early.
In 1847 he became a director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He was also active in the promotion of the Artists' Fund Society.
In 1855 Rothermel resigned his post, and the following year set out for Europe, traveling at his own expense, although James L. Claghorn, art connoisseur and later president of the Academy, urged upon him a list of fifty patrons for whom he might paint pictures. In London Rothermel made sketches of the actor, Edwin Forrest, to be used in his painting, "King Lear, " then journeyed through Belgium, up the Rhine, and across the Alps to Florence and Genoa.
For two years he resided in Rome, completing "King Lear" and "St. Agnes, " the latter bought by Count Conchilef. His "Virtuoso" went to St. Petersburg; a preliminary study for "King Lear, " his "Rubens and Van Dyck, " and his "Fountain Gen-net-z-zano" were bought by members of the Russian nobility. By way of Venice and Munich, Rothermel traveled back to Paris, where he exhibited in the Salon of 1859. Shortly afterward he returned to America.
His most ambitious canvas, "The Battle of Gettysburg, " was begun only after three years of preliminary research and sifting of the conflicting stories told by participants in the battle; the actual painting required a year and a half, and the picture was completed in 1871. It represented Pickett's charge on the afternoon of the third day. This heroic work, exhibited at Chicago, was rescued from the great fire by a young artist who carried it to Pittsburgh. For some time it hung in Memorial Hall, Philadelphia; it was exhibited in London in the eighties, and was finally installed in the Hall of Trophies in the Capitol at Harrisburg, for which it had been ordered by the Pennsylvania legislature. Rothermel's work was colorful, though inclined to the photographic, and his compositions were filled with well-handled figure groups.
Many of his paintings, including "Paul at Ephesus, " "The State House on the Day of the Battle of Germantown, " "Desdemona, " and "The Bather, " are to be found at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1877 he removed from Philadelphia to his country home, "Grassmere, " near Linfield, Montgomery County, Pa. , where he died eighteen years later.
