Peter Schmitt was born on December 2, 1958, in Miami, Florida, United States. He is the son of W. Gordon and Evelyn Schmitt.
Peter Schmitt began his studies at Amherst College in 1976 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English magna cum laude in 1980. From 1981 till 1983 he studied at the University of Iowa where he obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree in Poetry.
Peter Schmitt began his career in 1981 as an instructor at Kaplan, Inc. From 1982 till 1983 he was a teaching assistant in creative writing at the University of Iowa. In 1984-1986 he held the position of an adjunct lecturer in English at Florida International University. Then he joined the University of Miami as a lecturer in English. Since 2005 he has been holding the position of a senior lecturer in English at the university. The courses he teaches are creative writing, introduction to writing poetry, intermediate poetry workshop, poetry, freshman composition, advanced composition, introduction to literature, American Literature, English Literature, and others.
In addition to teaching, Schmitt also actively writes and edits. His books of poetry include Country Airport (1989), Hazard Duty (1995), Renewing the Vows (2007). His chapbooks are Incident in an Apartment Complex: A Suite of Voices (2009) and To Disappear (2006). He contributes to anthologies and textbooks, writes essays, reviews and also edits novels, short fiction, poetry, memoirs, children's literature, instructional manuals, video scripts, and scientific and technical journal articles. He was also invited as a judge of numerous literary awards.
Peter Schmitt is a member of the Academy of American Poetry, Poetry Society of America, Association of Literary Scholars and Critics, and Elizabeth Bishop Society.
