(A history of the world's most famous trading company base...)
A history of the world's most famous trading company based on Peter Newman's history. In 1838 Sir George Simpson, the governor of the HBC, was toasted at a dinner as the "Head of the most extended dominion in the known world - the Emperor of Russia, the Queen of England and the President of the United States excepted". It was an astonishing but appropriate tribute to a commercial enterprise of unique scope and character, with trading houses that once stretched from the Arctic Ocean to Hawaii. Yet the history of the HBC is less the story of a company than of a people - its self-proclaimed gentlemen-adventurers mapped a continent and built a nation. The exciting story of the company and the people is told in this book.

(This book draws the author's "Hudson's Bay" saga to its c...)
This book draws the author's "Hudson's Bay" saga to its conclusion. Here, the great fur-trading enterprise expands from its original western Canadian base to "conquer" the Arctic, leaving its influence on Inuit culture and lifestyle. How different would Canada's northern territories be now, had there been no Hudson's Bay Company to transform them from a hunting culture into a trapping and trading one? Peter Newman details the life and times of one of the Hudson's Bay Company's great governors, Donald Smith (he served for a record 44 years), who became one of his generation's leading business powers, concurrently heading the Bank of Montreal, and being the dominant financier behind the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. During World War I, the Hudson's Bay Company acquired the world's third-largest merchant ship fleet which enabled them to undertake secret missions for Winston Churchill and the Allies during World War II. The author reveals the extent of the boardroom backstabbing and conflicts of the 1970s when the Company was involved in a controversial takeover by Toronto billionaire Ken Thomson. The author's history of the Hudson's Bay Company began with "Company of Adventurers" and continued with "Caesars of the Wilderness".

(Peter C. Newman's series on The Canadian Establishment ha...)
Peter C. Newman's series on The Canadian Establishment has made publishing history, its two previous volumes having sold more than half a million copies. In this new book, Titans: How the New Canadian Establishment Seized Power, Newman takes a daring look at Canada's mega-wealthy, all powerful gunslingers, who will define the way we live and work in the 21st century. For the first time we get an intimate look into the lives and careers of these men and women who are true inhabitants of the global village, creatures more of their time than their place. They dictate the agenda of Canada's politicians, and gain legitimacy by donating surprisingly large gobs of cash to anyone willing to name buildings after them-what they call "f_ _ k-you money with a social conscience." As well as tackling the great Titans whose greed and influence straddles the nation, Newman details regional and local establishments that rule the roost in Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver. Like all of Newman's books, Titans is an explosive mixture of good humour ("New Money regards waiters as their buddies; Old Money treats them as self-propelled furniture") and tough comments (The Titans have reduced the idea of Canada to a flag of convenience-or occasionally, inconvenience-to be used or discarded, like a moth-eaten T-shirt.") Titans is sure to be the most cussed and discussed book of the year.

It is impossible to appreciate Canada in the mid- and late-1960s without reading The Distemper of Our Times. Newman's skilful selection of evidence, his grasp of personality and the flair and pace of his writing style bring the disparate events of that turbulent era into a cogent narrative that will retain its drama and urgency for future generations.

A social, political, and economic revolution has forged a profoundly different Canadian society in the closing decade of the 20th century. In the manner of his seminal history of the Quiet Revolution and the Pearson years, The Distemper of Our Times, Peter C. Newman details the tempestuous transformation of Canadian reality in the 1990s. The Canadian Revolution looks at the politicians, poets, tycoons, and performers who have made the history that matters most. Newman brings these often-unrecognized pivotal moments into sharp focus, highlighting key political figures like Pierre Trudeau and Preston Manning and the very different visions of Canada that have struggled for ascendance in the past decade.

(It is one of the world's great fortunes, the empire found...)
It is one of the world's great fortunes, the empire founded by Sam Bronfman and carried on through his family, a kingdom worth more than $7 billion nurtured on bootleg alcohol and sustained through decades of deals, scandals, legal explosions and intrafamily warfare. "Jesus, it would be a fascinating story," Sam Bronfman once said. "If I could ever tell the truth of all that happened....I'd sell ten million copies." Peter C. Newman tells the truth of it now, giving us an unprecedentedly candid look not only at the workings of a modern-day empire, but at the truly singular family that created it.
