In 1941 Peter received Bachelor of Arts at Oxford University.
Wiles devoted his career to teaching, first at All Souls College at Oxford University as a fellow in 1947. This position followed five years with the Royal Artillery during World War II. He then served as fellow at Oxford’s New College from 1949 to 1960.
Next Peter ventured to the United States for a stint at Brandeis University as professor of economics before heading to Sweden’s Institutet for International Ekonomi in Stockholm as a research officer in 1963. After a brief visiting professorship at City College of New York, Wiles joined the faculty at London University as professor of Russian social and economic studies from 1965 to 1985. The British Academy elected him as a fellow in 1990.
During his career, he earned a name for himself as an authority on communist economies. He also held visiting professorships at College de France and the University of Windsor, among others. Moreover, he wrote several books.
