Peter Mitrofanovich graduated from the Voronezh Real College (1911), studied at the Voronezh Free Drawing School, played in amateur performances.
At the end of 1911, the Shukhmin family moved to Moscow. Studied in the studio of V. Meshkov in Moscow (1912) and at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts (1916).
Peter Mitrofanovich acted as a drawing artist in the journal "Red Pepper", "Red Cornfield". In 1941-1945 he worked in the "TASS Windows". He was a founding member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia.
Peter Mitrofanovich taught at the All-Russian Academy of Arts (1934-1936) and Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts (1948-1952).
