Vaughan was born on August 16, 1956 in Minneapolis, United States; the son of Richard Henry Vaughan and Mary Gibb (Wurtele) Vaughan.
Vaughan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in 1978. Ten years later he was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Minnesota.
Vaughan began his career as a lecturer at Macalester College, since 1989. Also he has served as a consultant at Bell Museum of Natural History, since 1987.
Vaughan is a member of Ecological Society of America and American Society of Limnologists and Oceanographers.
