Philip John Roberts

Background

Philip John Roberts was born on the 8th of July, 1948 in Lusk, Wyoming, United States, the son of Leslie J. and LaVerne E. (Johns) Roberts.

Education

As a child, Philip Roberts attended public schools in Lusk, Torrington, Thermopolis, Worland, and numerous other towns around the West. He graduated from Cody High School in 1966 in Wyoming.

Philip attended Northwest College, Powell, and then entered the University of Wyoming where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973. In 1977 he earned a Juris Doctor degree from it. He also studied at the University of Washington in Seattle where he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1990.

Career

Philip Roberts served with United States Marine Corps before becoming an editor of Lake Powell Chronicle in Page from 1972 to 1973. He held the same position at Annals of Wyoming in 1982-1984, 1995-1997, 1998-2004.

During his career, he practiced law in Cheyenne from 1977 to 1979, in Laramie in 1984-85. He was a historian of the State of Wyoming from 1979 to 1984. Philip owned a publishing company, public Skyline West Press, Seattle in 1985-1990. He also was a co-publisher at Capitol Times in Cheyenne in 1981-84.

Roberts is Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Wyoming, where he has been working since 1990. He was a guest lecturer of media law in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates in 1996 and in Cairo in 2001.

Philip Roberts was a law liaison at the American Bar Association Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (ABA-CEELI) in Baku, Azerbaijan from 2003 to 2004. In 2004-2005 he served as a legal consultant for a project on legal education under the sponsorship of the ABA-CEELI in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Philip Roberts was an editor of “More Buffalo Bones: Stories from Wyoming's Past” in 1982. He wrote with David L. Roberts and Steven L. Roberts “Wyoming Almanac: A Succinct and Amusing Guidebook to Places, People, and Events in the Great State of Wyoming, with Information on Wildlife, Sports, Weather, and More” in 2001. He was the editor under the name Phil Roberts of “Readings in Wyoming History” in 1993 and under the name Phil Roberts, he wrote “A Penny for the Governor, a Dollar for Uncle Sam: Income Taxation in Washington” in 2002.

Philip Roberts has been a contributor to periodicals, as well. He contributes numerous articles to the Wyoming State Historical Society’s online wyohistory.org website.

Achievements

• Philip Roberts is particularly known for his writings, articles, and publications, as well as for his academic career at the University of Wyoming. As a professor of history there, he has taught courses in various areas of public history and developed several new courses at UW, including "History of Oil" and "History of Wyoming Law," for which he also authored the online casebook/textbook.
  
  He lectured and presented programs throughout Wyoming, averaging about 50 presentations annually and in nearly every Wyoming county. During his career, he chaired more than 50 graduate committees and served on many others in history, political science, mass media, and American studies where he was adjunct faculty.
  
  Roberts received a number of Journalism awards from Wyoming Press Association between 1978 and 1985.

Politics

Philip Roberts was a gubernatorial candidate of the State of Wyoming in 1998. He was a Chair of the Albany County Democratic Party in 1998-2000 and in 2002-04.
