The famous Wobbly poet, songwriter and organizer was executed in Salt Lake City on Nov. 19,1915. Many felt that he was not guilty of the murder he was charged with, that he did not have a fair trial and tht he was the victim of class persecution. Here the noted American labor historian presents the first complete study of this important labor case. Based on exhaustive research in a wide variety of sources, many never before examined, Dr. Foner conclusively demonstrates that Joe Hill was the victim of a colossal frameup.

(The second volume in this series continues the story begu...)
The second volume in this series continues the story begun in Volume 1: the history of black Americans and their struggle for equality. The first volume documented the evolution of the Communist Party of the United States and its relationship with black Americans during the first decade of the Party's existence. Taking up the story in 1930, and again relying mainly on primary sources, Volume 2 examines the final text of the "Resolution on the Negro Question." The resolution states that racism infected the American Communist Party and was reflected in its work, and to combat it, the Party urged vigorous self-criticism together with systematic education on the sources of racism. The resolution further declared that white workers must "show by action, that they are fighting with the Negroes against all racial discrimination and persecution."Without such a constant struggle, the resolution continued, the Black workers would not be drawn to the Party. Unlike previous groups in the American Left (especially the Socialists) the Communist Party viewed "the Negro question" as a national question, and defined the Party's role as fighting for "proletarian hegemony" within a broad Black liberation movement that included other political tendencies. This work seeks to substantiate the view that the significant impact of communism in combating racism and supporting Black Liberation cannot be ignored by any serious student of United States history and society. Author note: Philip S. Foner is Professor Emeritus of History at Lincoln University. Herbert Shapiro is Professor of History at the University of Cincinnati.

(Outstanding leader of the Negro people in the last centur...)
Outstanding leader of the Negro people in the last century and one of the most brilliant minds of his time, Frederick Douglass spoke and wrote on all the major issues confronting the American people during his lifetime. "The Civil War," third volume of the four-volume edition of his collected works, brings together for the first time his writings and speeches during one of a most crucial period. Better perhaps than any of his contemporaries, Douglass understood the fundamental issues at stake in the Civil War, the contradictions within the Union Army camp, and the necessary program for victory. In articles and editorials, speeches and letters, he dealt with them all. In this volume will be found the record of his relations with Lincoln, his oft-reiterated demand for the emancipation of the slaves as fundamental to a Union victory, his stirring calls for arms for the Negro people. Here too, are his analyses of the course of the war, which reveal the full stature of his leadership. In addition to his work as editor, Dr. Philip S. Foner, eminent historian and author of "History of the Labor Movement in the U.S.," has contributed a full-scale biography covering Doulass' activities during the Civil War. Dr. Foner spent eight years collecting and editing Douglass' writings, which had been scattered in many libraries and historical societies. The other volumes are "Early Years," "The Pre-Civil War Decade," and "Reconstruction and After." -from the inside flap

(There are several documentary histories of Black America,...)
There are several documentary histories of Black America, but The Black Worker: A Documentary History From Colonial Times to the Present represents the first compilation of original materials which encompasses the entire history of Afro-American labor. Since the vast majority of Afro-Americans are, and always have been, "workers," this series fills a crucial gap in our understanding of a hitherto neglected, but highly significant, aspect of the black experience. Consequently, it is hoped that this collection will do for the black working class what John R. Commons, most particularly, did for the white working class in his famous Documentary history of American Industry. Volume 2, The Black Worker During the Era of the National Labor Union begins with the call for a convention of black leaders from around the nation to meet in Washington D.C., in December 1869, for the purpose of organizing a counterpart to the white-dominated National Labor Union. The association which emerged from this meeting, the Colored National Labor Union, represented the first confederation of black trade unions. Even though it did not last more than a few years, the CNLU conventions are of considerable historical significance because the assembled black leaders voiced the local concerns of their communities. Therefore, these conventions provide an excellent sounding board for the hopes and fears of black America. Moreover, along with the local and state labor meetings, which also are reproduced in this volume, the proceedings of the CNLU, available here for the first time, reveal the nature and scope of activism among black workers during the 1870s, a decade of complex cross-currents in the labor movement, and a period of economic and political turmoil in the nation at large. Vol. 2 explores the intricate race relations between black & white workers, who sometimes cooperated, but all too frequently found themselves in conflict. The documents are presented with introductions & notes.

From the Introduction: "The significant impact of communism in combating racism in the labor movement and in support of Black liberation cannot be ignored by any serious student of United States history and society. This documentary study seeks to substantiate that view. The editors have tried to select from the mass of primary material they gathered those documents, articles, speeches, and news items that indicate most clearly the formation, evolution, and application of Communist policy with respect to the condition and freedom struggle of Black Americans...."

(Hailed as a classic in music studies when it was first pu...)
Hailed as a classic in music studies when it was first published in 1977, Early Downhome Blues is a detailed look at traditional country blues artists and their work. Combining musical analysis and cultural history approaches, Titon examines the origins of downhome blues in African American society. He also explores what happened to the art form when the blues were commercially recorded and became part of the larger American culture. From forty-seven musical transcriptions, Titon derives a grammar of early downhome blues melody. His book is enriched with the recollections of blues performers, audience members, and those working in the recording industry. In a new afterword, Titon reflects on the genesis of this book in the blues revival of the 1960s and the politics of tourism in the current revival under way.

(Proceedings of the Black National and State Conventions, ...)
Proceedings of the Black National and State Conventions, 1865-1900 Vol 1; traces the black convention movement in the years following the civil war. This volume covers the evolution of the convention movement up through the year 1870, with the passage in that year of the Fifteenth Amendment, granting black Americans the right to vote. Unlike the previous series, this book arranges the proceedings chronologically, beginning with the national conventions, followed by the states, for each of the given years. Each of the conventions is prefaced by an introduction. Since the number of conventions varied with respect to delegates present, issued debated, and impact, the introductions, accordingly vary in size. Reference notes for each convention has been placed at the end of that convention. Unless otherwise indicated, all conventions listed in this volume are in pamphlet form. Space limitations precluded presentation of all the national and state conventions which met during this period. Nevertheless, the materials included in this volume represent a significant cross-section of Afro-American thought and action that developed in the post-bellum years. Conventions not contained in this volume have been listed in the Appendix for the convenience of the reader. (No national conventions met in 1870, therefore, none included.)
