Career
His first work was as a member of the studio of Nicholas Duchesne, whose daughter he married, and whose successor he became in the work on the Medici Gallery at the Luxembourg Palace. His connection with the court resulted in the famous Vow of Louis XIII (Caen) and a number of portraits of Cardinal Richelieu, the best known of which is in the Louvre. To modern eyes, his most interesting work is the group of paintings of the Jansenists of Port-Royal. His clear, forceful presentation and gray tones are finely illustrated in Mother Agnes and Sister Catherine of St. Susanne (Louvre), a painting which was a token of the cure by prayer of his daughter, also a member of the Jansenist community.
