Phillip was born on March 22, 1938 in Los Angeles, California, United States. He is the son of Edward and Katherine (Butterfield) Berryman.

Phillip got Bachelor of Arts degree at St. John’s Seminary College in Camarillo, California in 1959. Four years later he obtained Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology degree. In 1968 Berryman also attended Instituto Pastoral Latinoamericano in Quito, Ecuador.
Berryman began his career as an administrator and counselor at St. Philip Church in Pasadena, California in 1963 and held the post till 1965, when he became a pastoral worker at Parroquia de Fatima in Chorrillo, Panama. In 1973 Phillip served as a counselor at Opportunities Industrialization Center in San Jose, California and held the position till 1976, when he started to work as a Central American program director at American Friends Service Committee in Guatemala. Since 1981 he served as a consultant, translator and writer. In 1987 Phillip taught at Villanova University. Two years later he worked as a teacher at Rosemont College.
In 1990 he held the post of a teacher at Stockton State College. Also, in 1993 Berryman started to work as a lecturer at Temple University and served on this position till 1995. Phillip Berryman gave lectures on tour in over forty states. Currently he is a professor of Latin American Studies at Temple University.
Moreover, Phillip translated multiple writings. Some of them are the following: "Theology of Christian Solidarity" (1985), "Revolutionaries for the Gospel: Testimonies of Fifteen Christians in the Nicaraguan Government" (1986), "The Ideological Weapons of Death: A Theological Critique of Capitalism" (1986) and others.
Phillip became a fellow of Helen Kellogg Institute for International Relations, University of Notre Dame in 1990.
Berryman married Angela Brennan, a political organizer, on December 21, 1973. They have 3 children - Catherine, Margaret and Elizabeth.
