He played for the Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association from 1979 to 1989. He later served as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards from 2003–2009 and as the head coach of the Los Angeles Doctorate-Fenders in 2014-2015. Hubbard played high school basketball at athletic powerhouse Canton McKinley High School.
He also played college basketball at the University of Michigan where he helped lead the team to the 1976 National Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Game against Indiana University.
His 389 rebounds in the 1976-1977 season remains the single season record at Michigan. Hubbard was selected by the Pistons with the 15th overall pick in the 1979 National Basketball Association Draft.
Hubbard"s son, Maurice, is a basketball player at the University of South Carolina at Aiken and played high school basketball at Westfield High School in Chantilly, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, District of Columbia Hubbard"s daughter, Whitney, is a graduate of Hampton University and played high school volleyball also for Westfield High School.
