Phyllis Schieber was born on February 18, 1953, in New York City, United States. She is the daughter of Kurt and Henia Schieber.
Phyllis received a Bachelor of Arts from Herbert H. Lehman College of the City University of New York in 1973. She also earned a Master of Arts in English Literature from New York University in 1974 and a Master of Science from Yeshiva University in 1977.
After graduating, Phyllis worked as a high school English teacher in Norwalk, Connecticut. She then was learning disabilities specialist, serving at Iona College, New Rochelle from 1989 to 1995, and at Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, New York from 1991 to 2003. After that she became freelance writer and editor. She also works privately with students, teaching writing.
Schieber's first novel, Strictly Personal, for young adults, was published by Fawcett-Juniper in 1987. Her next work, The Sinner's Guide to Confession, came out in 2008, and a year after Willing Spirits was published by William Morrow. Schieber's most recent work is The Manicurist, in which she painted a fine portrait of the struggles and challenges of being different in an unforgiving world. It was published in 2011 by Bell Bridge Books.

Phyllis married Howard Yager on August 3, 1974. They have one son, Isaac Kurt.
