He was born Pierre Félix Louis on December 10, 1870, in Ghent, Belgium.
He studied in Paris at the Ecole Alsacienne, where he met Andre Gide.
In 1891 he founded La Conque, a review in which he published his first poems and those of Henri de Regnier, Gide, and Paul Valery. Astarte (1891), a volume of verse, contained reprints of some of the poems published in La Conque.
Louys's imitations of Greek lyrics were so genuine that many critics accepted them for faithful translations of newly discovered works. Many of these appeared in Poesies de Meleagre de Gadara (1893), Scenes de la vie des courtisanes de Lucien (1894), and Les Chansons de Bilitis (1894). In 1896, his novel Aphrodite proved a resounding success. Throughout these worksLouys had one controlling purpose: to ally beauty and sensuousness. In 1898, he published La Femme et le pantin, which is a psychological novel depicting a man enslaved and ruined by sensuality. Les Aventures du roi Pausole (1900) is a series of amusing amorous adventures.
