Background
Rosenberg, Pierre Max was born on April 13, 1936 in Paris. Son of Charles and Gertrude (Nassauer) Rosenberg.
(Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) was a French Jesui...)
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) was a French Jesuit theologian and scientist renowned for his pioneering field work in paleontology. His visionary writings on the reconciliation of faith and evolutionary theory aroused the suspicions of the Vatican and he was forbidden to publish on religious matters during his lifetime. After his death, the publication of his many books marked him as one of the most influential Catholic thinkers of this century - a mystic whose holistic vision speaks with growing relevance to contemporary spirituality. Often considered ahead of his time, Teilhard's writings have more relevance and impact on our current times than when he was first published. "Splendid . . . Invaluable . . . One of a kind."--Mary Evelyn Tucker, Yale University

( Pierre Rosenberg, the distinguished art historian and d...)
Pierre Rosenberg, the distinguished art historian and director of the Musée du Louvre, has long admired and studied both paintings and drawings. This dual interest may seem commonplace but is in fact highly unusual: specialists in the field of drawing rarely write about painting, and vice versa. From Drawing to Painting offers a unique perspective by interweaving biographical information about five renowned French artists--Nicolas Poussin, Antoine Watteau, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Jacques-Louis David, and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres--with a fascinating look at dozens of their drawings and the links that they have to their paintings. Presenting over 260 illustrations, this book explores drawing as a site of reflection, the space between the idea of a painted image and its realization on canvas. How, why, and for whom did these artists draw? What value did they place on their drawings? How did their drawings get handed down to us? In what way do they enable us better to understand the artists' intentions, their creative processes, and to penetrate their worlds? Rosenberg determines that each artist approached drawing in a distinctive way, reflecting his individual training, work habits, and personal ambitions. For example, Poussin viewed his drawings simply as working documents, Watteau preferred his drawings to his paintings, and Fragonard made a lucrative business selling his graphic work. For David and Ingres, drawing had a considerable pedagogical function, whether in copying the great works of their predecessors or in sharpening their own techniques. Originally delivered as a series of Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., From Drawing to Painting gives the reader an unprecedented view of the artistic process. This richly illustrated book will make an important and beautiful addition to any art library.

Charming yet scholarly, this book explores the work of the French artist Jean Baptiste Simon Chardin, who brought a breath of fresh air to 18th-century painting. His masterful sense of color and light filled his simple domestic interiors and delicate renderings of still lifes with a profound humanism. A major Chardin exhibition opens in June 2000 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. 126 illustrations, 86 in full color, 5 x 7"

This book accompanies an exhibition at Waddesdon that will unite Chardin's four paintings of a boy with a house of cards for the first time (loans come from the Muse'e du Louvre, Paris; National Gallery, London; National Gallery of Art, Washington DC), allowing us to examine Chardin's treatment of the subject in the context of his fascination with themes of play, childhood and adolescence.

(This is a fine collection of letters by the mystic-scient...)
This is a fine collection of letters by the mystic-scientist Teilhard de Chardin to his close friend and fellow scientist, the Jesuit Pierre Leroy. The correspondence shows the personal and human side of Teilhard and is of special interest to the American reader because it contains the letters he wrote during his years in New York City, immediately before his death there in 1955. This book is important not only because it reveals this great Christian's hidden life, but also because it sheds a great deal of light on the direction his professional life was taking at the time of his death.

( Antoine Watteau (1684–1721) produced some of the most s...)
Antoine Watteau (1684–1721) produced some of the most seductive drawings in Western art. This book, published to accompany an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, reproduces his finest examples, revealing the delicacy and freedom of execution that so impressed early commentators and had such a profound effect on subsequent generations of artists, notably François Boucher and Jean-Honoré Fragonard. Well-known art historians Pierre Rosenberg and Louis-Antoine Prat examine these masterly studies, focusing on the artist's development as a draftsman, the techniques that he perfected, and the fascinating role that drawing played in his work. The illustrations, which include recently discovered works, are superbly reproduced.
