(This is a collection of texts from the Hupa, who lived in...)
This is a collection of texts from the Hupa, who lived in Northern California, Humboldt County, on the Trinity River. The texts are unfiltered translations of stories related by Hupa at the start of the 20th century in an ethnographic context. They largely take place in a time before the arrival of human beings, populated by trickster gods and supernatural beings called Kixunai. The texts include a number of shamanistic formulas for healing, protection and good luck. ( About the Book Fairy tales, wonder tales, magic tales a...)
About the Book Fairy tales, wonder tales, magic tales are a folklore genre taking the form of a short story that typically includes magical beings such as dragons, elves, fairies, giants, gnomes, goblins, griffins, mermaids, talking animals, trolls, unicorns, or witches. Generally, magic or enchantments are involved. Fairy tales are distinguished from legends, are mainly derived from European tradition and folk lore, and are generally children's literature. Mythology has a broader and older pedigree than fairy tales, dating back to ancient times in a number of European, African, Middle Eastern and Asian civilizations. Best known among these to Western audiences are Ancient Greek and Old Norse myths and legends. Generally, these myths and legends describe epic quests, journeys and interactions between human adventurers or heroes and god-like deities. Also in this Book A short story collection is a book that contains short stories written by a single author. It is distinguished from an anthology of fiction, which includes stories by more than one author. (Navajo or Navaho (native name: Dine bizaad) is an Athabas...)
Navajo or Navaho (native name: Dine bizaad) is an Athabaskan language (of Na-Dene stock) spoken in the southwest United States by the Navajo people (Dine). It is geographically and linguistically one of the Southern Athabaskan languages (the majority of Athabaskan languages are spoken in northwest Canada and Alaska). Navajo claims more speakers than any other Native American or First Nation language north of the U.S.-Mexico border, with more than 100,000 native speakers, and this number has actually increased with time. During World War II, a code based on Navajo was used by code talkers to send secure military messages over radio. ( About the Book The Americas were settled by people migr...)
About the Book The Americas were settled by people migrating from Asia at the height of an Ice Age 15,000 years ago. There was no contact with Europeans until Vikings appeared briefly in the 10th century, and the voyages of Christopher Columbus from 1492. America's Indigenous peoples were the Paleo-Indians, who were initially hunter-gatherers. Post 1492, Spanish, Portuguese and later English, French and Dutch colonialists arrived, conquering and settling the discovered lands over three centuries, from the early 16th to the early 19th centuries. The United States achieved independence from England in 1776, while Brazil and the larger Hispanic American nations declared independence in the 19th century. Canada became a federal dominion in 1867. Also in this Book United States history began with the migrations of Indigenous people prior to 15,000 BC. Christopher Columbus's 1492 expedition enabled European colonization, with most colonies formed after 1600. By the 1770s, 13 British colonies held 2.5 million people along the Atlantic coast east of the Appalachians. The British government imposed new taxes after 1765 and would not agree to the colonists having a say in their determination. The American War of Independence, 1775–1783, ensued, resulting in independence, and another war was declared against Britain in 1812. The next 50 years saw the expansion of American states and territories through the west, however growth was curtailed by the costly American Civil War, which broke out in 1861 over the Confederate States' wish to continue the practice of slavery, and the Union's wish to preserve the union. By 1865 some 620,000 people died, making it the most costly in US history. Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867. The next decades up to World War 1 saw large migrations from Europe and massive growth in the US economy. The US had a short but decisive influence on World War 1, suffered during the Great Depression, and had an even greater decisive influence on the outcome of World War 2. The US then engaged in a Cold War with its military and ideological adversary, the USSR, which disintegrated in 1991. Over the 20th century the US was not just a dynamo of technological advancement, but also contributed greatly to world growth. ethnologist linguist scientist
Pliny Earle Goddard was born on November 24, 1869, in Lewiston, Maine. He was the son of Charles W. and Elmira A. (Nichols) Goddard.
His father was a market-gardener, florist, and Quaker preacher.
Pliny attended the Oak Grove Seminary at Vassalboro, and then followed the headmaster to Oakgrove Seminary, Union Springs, New York, where he graduated in 1889.
He then entered Earlham College from which he received the degree of B. A. in 1892 and of M. A. four years later.
Realizing the need of formal training for ethnographical research, he determined to undertake postgraduate study.
His linguistic studies among the Indians secured his admission to the University of California, the personal interest of President Benjamin Ide Wheeler, and finally an instructorship in the newly instituted department of anthropology.
The University awarded him the degree of Ph. D. in 1904.
Pliny taught in the Richmond Square Academy in Lewisville, Indiana, at the Lowell Institute in Lowell, Kansas, and in a public school at Sulphur Springs, Indiana.
While his fortunes were at a low ebb in 1896-97, he began to read about the American Indian, and finally secured an appointment as a lay missionary under the auspices of the Woman’s Indian Aid Association of Philadelphia to the Hupa Indians of California. Here he became greatly interested in ethnology.
He was an assistant professor from 1906 to 1909, when he became assistant curator of anthropology in the American Museum of Natural History in New York; and in this institution, he was a curator of ethnology from 1914 to his death.
He was editor of the American Anthropologist from 1915 to 1920, and founder and co-editor with Franz Boas of the International Journal of American Linguistics.
At the time of his death, he was secretary of the Organizing Committee of the International Society of Americanists.
Pliny Earle Goddard is noted for his extensive documentation of the languages and cultures of the Athabaskan peoples of western North America. Goddard played a major role in creating the academic infrastructure for American Indian linguistics and anthropology in North America. The printed works representing Goddard’s contributions to Indian language and culture consist of papers on special subjects rather than large monographs. His works marked him as an outstanding authority in Athapascan. His seventy publications, most intensive, uniformly valuable studies predominantly on Indian languages, are to be found in the publications of the University of California, in the American Anthropologist, and in the publications of the American Museum of Natural History.

Kroeber considered Goddard one of the most vivid personalities in American anthropology. In general, his contributions to science were produced as a labor of love.
In the early 1920s, Goddard left his wife and children and began a relationship with Gladys A. Reichard (1893-1955), which continued until his death.
In 1893, Goddard married Alice C. Rockwell of Palmyra, Michigan, who was a student with him in Earlham College. Six children were born to them.
