( This sweeping survey of the artistic achievements of Hi...)
This sweeping survey of the artistic achievements of Himalayan culture is the first major exhibition to include objects from all the major religions of the region. Created to accompany the landmark art exhibition that will include almost two hundred of the finest works of art created between the sixth and nineteenth centuries in India, Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan, this book explores the particular beauty that evolved from the spiritual traditions unique to the Himalayas. Lavishly illustrated with many rarely seen images, Himalayas conveys the spiritual aspirations of those who defied the physical hardships of an arduous mountain terrain to express their soaring creative spirit. Currently held in private and public collections in North America and Europe, seventy percent of this art has never been published or publicly exhibited. The works include temple sculptures of stone and wood; works in terracotta; cast bronzes with inlaid gemstones, gilding, and paint; colorful paintings—from reverential portraits to depictions of awe-inspiring deities—on cloth, palm leaf, paper, and wood; and ritual objects in various media. Pratapaditya Pal provides a fascinating description of the cultural milieu in which these works of art were created. Copublished with the Art Institute of Chicago

(The word kama basically means "desire," and, hence, the K...)
The word kama basically means "desire," and, hence, the Kamasutra is a book that helps facilitate the fulfillment of human desires. The essential message of the Bhagavadgita is devotion - complete and unconditional devotion to God - as the principal mode of attaining salvation. In order to gain salvation, however, one must first be motivated and, therefore, behind devotion lies the impetus of desire. The urge or the yearning to unite with the divine is no less passionate and intense than the desire of two lovers to unite. Hence, Indian religious thought has always recognized the parallel between sexuality and spirituality. from the INTRODUCTION by Pratapaditya Pal

Jainism originates in India where it has been practised since the 6th century BC. The Jains have produced a diverse range of art that has been little known in the West. This volume is illustrated with examples from all ages, offering a comprehensive introduction to the art of the Jains and an insight into the practices, principles and beliefs of the religion. Pratapaditya Pal describes the different forms of art produced in each period: temples and shrines, wood, stone and bronze, illuminated manuscripts, monumental cloth paintings, architectural reliefs and votive tablets. The volume also includes an examination of Jain ritual and philosophical thought, an entertaining account of Jain pilgrimages and overviews of Jain cosmological painting and manuscript illustration.

(Few publications have ever been attempted that bring the ...)
Few publications have ever been attempted that bring the arts of India and Southeast Asia together in so comprehensive a manner as does The Sensuous Immortals. It is well known that many of the artistic traditions of the South and Southeast Asian countries today known as Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam were inspired by ideas emanating from India over about two millennia of political flux. As political boundaries changed and ethnic stocks mixed, the Hindu and Buddhist religions migrated outward. The complex mythologies and countless deities of the Indian religions—the "sensuous immortals"—were adopted by the other Asian peoples and embodied in a wealth of sculpture. The Sensuous Immortals provides not only a rich visual fare of examples of a great variety of Indian sculptural traditions and shapes, it also reveals how those objects shaped the aesthetic works of other South and Southeast Asian religions and peoples between 200 BC and 1600 AD. Highlighting stone and bronze pieces from a private collection, The Sensuous Immortals has 200 photographic illustrations, mostly full page, including 75 color plates. Written by Dr. Pratapaditya Pal, Senior Curator of Indian and Islamic Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the sound and readable text provides basic, comprehensive catalogue information, including identification, dating, and justification, for each of the 180 objects illustrated. The general reader will find useful Dr. Pal's introduction to the historical, art historical, religious/philosophical context of the objects. The book is conveniently organized for use by the scholar and collector, with illustrations facing explanatory texts. The Sensuous Immortals grew out of a 1977-78 exhibition by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, introducing to the public a vast private collection of Indian and Southeast Asian objects covering numerous areas and regions. Here is a wealth of new material, finely reproduced, with a useful text that will be of great interest to both general and specialist readers.

These lavishly illustrated books are the first and second in a series of three cataloguing the Asian art collection at the Norton Simon Museum. Each work of art is fully illustrated and discussed, and both volumes include substantial introductions that shed light on the aesthetic and metaphysical underpinnings of these masterpieces. The collection’s many highlights include a particularly fine assemblage of South Indian bronzes of the Chola period. Volume 2 concentrates on sculptures and paintings from the Indian states of Jammu, Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh, as well as the countries of Nepal, Tibet, and China. These works date from the fifth to the twentieth century. Pratapaditya Pal is an internationally recognized authority on the art of South and Southeast Asia and is Fellow for Research at the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, California.
