Studied surgery under Roux. 1897 defended doctor’s thesis in Lausanne on ’’Causes of Death After Bilateral Vagotomy" and, in accordance with the wishes of his grandfather Artificial Intelligence Herzen, moved to Moscow. Foreign 22 years worked at Staro-Yekaterinskava Hospital.
Served in Russo-Japanese War. 1909 defended doctor’s thesis on nephrolysine in Moscow. From 1910 associate professor, Faculty Surgery Clinic, Moscow University.
From 1917 professor, Chair of Operative Surgery and Topographical Anatomy, 2nd Moscow State University. During World War 1 and Civil War, consultant and head surgeon, various hospitals. From 1921 head, Chair of General Surgery, 1st Moscow Stale University.
From 1934 until death head, Chair of Hospital Surgery, 1st Moscow Medical Institute; 1921-1947 also director, Institute for the Treatment of Tumors (now P.A. Gertsen Centr Oncological Institute). Chairman, Moscow Surgical Social.
From 1923 chairman, Surgical Expertise Commission, State Learned Council. Member, International Surgicid Social. Trained large school of oncologists.
Wrote over 90 works.
