1888 graduate Medical Faculty, Moscow University.
From 1889 assistant dissector, Chair of Normal Anatomy, Moscow University. 1894 defended doctor’s thesis on nerve fibers of the spinal cord. 1894-1923 lectured on anatomy at Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
1900-1930 professor Chair of Normal Anatomy, Moscow University. Also lectured at Higher State Technical Art Studios, State Institute of Stagecraft and Institute of Physical Education. Organized chairs of normal anatomy in Tbilisi, Astrakhan, Smolensk and Minsk, which he visited on a lecture tour.
1924 helped to embalm Lenin’s corpse. 1928 supervised planning and construction of new building for Anatomical Institute, 1st Moscow Medical Institute on Mokhovaya Street. Was one of first Russians to study the conduction paths of the central nervous system.
Divided the white matter of the spinal cord into two major groups depending on the period of myelination. 1. early development group (the sensory fibers and, in part, the motor fibers). 2. late development group (the corticospinal tract and the libers of the Lissauer zone).
Distinguished different liber systems in embryos and fetuses on the basis of development. Member, various planning and educational reform commissions. Member, Sciences Methods Commission on Physical Education, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Supreme Soviet.
Edited several anatomy manuals.
