R. C. Richardson was born on August 31, 1944, in Middleton, Lancashire, United Kingdom. He is a son of Clifford Richardson, a painting contractor, and Doris (Taylor) Richardson, a shop owner.
Richardson graduated from the University of Leicester with honors, with his bachelor's degree in history in 1965. He then received his doctor's degree from the University of Manchester three years later.
Richardson began his career at Thames Polytechnic (now University of Greenwich), working as a lecturer there, becoming a senior lecturer, a post which he held from 1968 till 1977. From that same year, Richardson worked as a head of the department of the King Alfred’s University College (now University of Winchester), also serving there as a professor in 1993.
Among his writings are Puritanism in North-West England, Regional Study of the Diocese of Chester to 1642, The Debate on the English Revolution, Town and Countryside in the English Revolution and Explaining the English Revolution.
