Rachel Caine is a pen name of Roxanne Longstreet Conrad, an American writer of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, suspense, and horror novels. She is the "New York Times" bestselling author of more than fifty novels, including the Weather Warden series, the Outcast Season series, the Revivalist series, and the Morganville Vampires series.
Background
Rachel Caine (born name Roxanne Longstreet Conrad) was born on April 27, 1962, in White Sands Missile Range, Texas, United States. Her father was the “voice of the countdown” at White Sands Missile Range. Her mother worked for actual rocket scientists.
Education
Caine graduated from Socorro High School in El Paso, Texas, in 1980. She earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from the Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech University in 1985, with a minor in music.
After graduating from Texas Tech University, Rachel had a number of careers in the business world, including accounting, tax preparation, payroll administration, insurance investigation, web design, technical writing, and corporate communications. From 1999, Caine was employed in Corporate Communications as a web designer, editor, Corporate Communications Manager, and finally as Director of Corporate Communications for a large multinational company.
Rachel began her publishing career in 1991 under the name Roxanne Longstreet with her first novel, Stormriders, a media tie-in novel for the role-playing game Shadow World. In 2003, she began writing as Rachel Caine with the launch of the bestselling Weather Warden series in urban fantasy, followed by spinoff series Outcast Season, the Red Letter Days duology, and the Revivalist series.
She spent about two years considering what to do, and came up with the Weather Warden series, which sold to a brand new publisher (Roc) in 2001. Since then, the series has done extremely well, and the books include Ill Wind, Heat Stroke, Chill Factor, Windfall, and (most recently) Firestorm. Around the same time, she hooked up with a local Dallas-area publisher, BenBella Books, who was putting out a series called SmartPop - nonfiction essays centered around fan-friendly TV shows like “Buffy,” “Angel,” “Stargate,” “Alias”… She ended up doing a lot of work with them, and am about to do some more for 2007.
In 2006, she began her career in young adult novels with the 15-book Morganville Vampires series. In 2014 she published her first stand-alone YA novel, Prince of Shadows, and in 2015, launched a new series The Great Library, with Ink and Bone and Paper and Fire. The third volume, Ash and Quill, is out July 2017.
2017 also brings the launch of Stillhouse Lake, a new thriller series for the adult market, and a new YA series co-written with YA/Urban Fantasy author Ann Aguirre, called The Honors. In addition, Rachel plans to release a new independently published Weather Warden novel, Red Hot Rain.
In the film and television world, Morganville Vampires was filmed in 2014 as a web series, with almost a million views to date. Rachel’s novel Exile, Texas is under option as a feature film.
She also publishes media tie-in novels as Julie Fortune.

Caine wanted to be a classical symphonic musician, not a writer. Writing was just something she did for fun. But after talking to a few writers, she got so excited about it that it began to take over her life, and finally she decided she had to make a decision about which dream to follow. She chose the writing. Must have been the right choice, because within a year, she’d sold her first book.
Quotations:
“I try very hard not to write more than one at a time, but there are caveats to that. I typically write between 3,000 and 5,000 words a day, so writing four books a year is comfortable for me most of the time. But what gets tricky is that just turning in a book isn’t the end of the process. Generally, each book has one or two editorial drafts, then a copy-edits draft, then a proof-check before the book is published. It’s inevitable that things overlap.”
“I’ve always loved thrillers and yearned to write one. The idea and timing came together for me though I had no idea if anyone would be interested in publishing the book.”
"I don’t base my characters on real people as a rule, but some of the vampires are historical people. I started with Claire and figured out what she was like, and then filled in characters around her. (And continue to do that!)"
"One thing about my career: I've never stayed in my comfort zone. I started out in media tie-in, migrated to horror, then romantic suspense, then urban fantasy, then romance, over to young adult... I love taking chances, and jumping into suspense felt fresh and exciting to me."
“I never think too much about “target audience.” I try to write a story that will appeal to anyone, of any age. Because the main characters of this story are of the age of young adults, that’s where the market will be, but if you’re looking for a huge story of adventure and ideas with a diverse range of characters … I think you’re the target audience.”
“Research is an art. You have to be able to do more than enough to get the job done, but not too much, because it takes over your process. You will never know as much as an expert in any field you’re researching, so source experts when you can, and do your best when you can’t. Research is a tool for writing … not an end in itself.”
Personality
Caine listens to music while she writes, the playlist changing from project to project: "I listen to many different kinds of music, and I find I need new music every book … so the first thing I do when I start is pick a few songs to start out with, and look for more music as I go. I tend to like alternative music, with a good sprinkling of pop, rock, some classics, even soundtrack music."
She reads constantly and likes historical fiction, as well as gritty crime novels with equal zeal and love. She has about 5000 books in her house, and each of them is there because they’ve influenced her in some way.
Physical Characteristics:
Rachel Caine is a breast cancer survivor: “After four surgeries in 2018, I’m finally back to good health, active, and about 100 percent happier and more positive than I was in mid-2017. And yes, it greatly impacted my writing process! I struggled a lot with exhaustion and lack of focus. Deadlines had to wait, and my publishers were incredibly helpful in rescheduling releases. Keeping commitments was difficult for me the whole year."
