Rachel Rosenfield was born on July 6, 1951, in New York, United States.
Rachel Rosenfield earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, in 1972 and a Master of Arts in Art History from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1974. She took postgraduate courses in art history at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1975-1977.
In 1979 Rachel Rosenfield became an associate curator in charge of twentieth-century art and photography at the Portland Art Museum, Oregon. She was an assistant curator there in 1978-1979, and an administrative assistant at the Center for Conservation and Technical Studies, Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, in 1975-1977. Rachel Rosenfield taught art history in the Department of Continuing Education of the University of Massachusetts in 1974.
