Toedtemeier received a BS from Oregon State University, Corvallis, in 1969.
In 1980 he served as interim curator for the Museum of Art at Washington State University, Pullman, and as consultant to the Washington Consortium of Art Museums and the Seattle Arts Commission. He co-founded and co-directed the Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, Oregon, for five years, beginning in 1975. Toedtemeier served as a consultant to the Oregon Arts Commission in 1977 and was on the Media Services staff at Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington, in 1975. In 1978 he was artist-in-residence at Lewis and Clark College in Portland. He also does research and lectures on nineteenth-century photography in the West and has curated numerous contemporary exhibitions.
