Background
Bhandary, Raja Ram was born on February 12, 1948 in Kathmandu, Nepal, Asia. Son of Rishi Ram and Madan Devi Bhandary. He was the sixth son preceded by four sisters. As was custom with affluent families in Kathmandu in the years after the Rana rule, he was sent to India for his schooling. His passion for design and architecture had been ingrained into him at an early age when he grew up among Gothic and neo-classical buildings the Rana prime ministers had commissioned from European designers. His family's strict adherence to Hindu principles and worship also exposed him to incredible temples, stupas and historical pathways in and around Kathmandu and later India. This mixture honed his intent.
As a professional architect, he was an original maverick in "pre-modern" Nepal who designed important works that included commercial and residential reliefs. He incorporated modern ideas embedded in the foundations of original Nepali designs. His influence still resonates to this day in Kathmandu.
