Background
Battell was the son of Ralph Battell, Master of Arts, rector of All Saints" and Saint John"s, Hertford. Was born on 11 April 1649, and received his education at Peterhouse, Cambridge (Bachelor, 1669. Master of Arts, 1673; Doctor of Divinity, comitiis regiis, 1705).
