Ramon Oviedo was a Dominican painter who considered one of the most important artists of the Dominican Republic. Being one of the leading figures of Dominican expressionism, he was called the Dominican Picasso by critics and connoisseurs.
Background
Ramon Oviedo (born Ramon Euclides Oviedo Herasme) was born on February 7, 1924 in Barahona, Dominican Republic. The son of Luis Santiago Oviedo Patino, a draftsman and cartographer, and Ana Rosa Herasme Lugo.
Ramon lived between Barahona and Neyba with his mother and grandmother. At an early age he moved to the city of Santo Domingo where he lived with his father and his paternal brothers.
Education
At the age of thirteen, Oviedo worked as an apprentice of Foto Grabador, in the workshop of Manuel Peligrín, of Spanish nationality.
Career
As a young man, Oviedo started to work as a cartoonist in the advertising world where he stood out. In 1959 he worked in the First Advertising Agency of the Dominican Republic, later he held the position of Art Director of the Drawing Department at another advertising agency. After the April Revolution of 1965, Oviedo worked in the advertising agency Fenix.
Later he worked with Mr. Reynaldo Muñiz, of the Puerto Rican nationality. With him he knew the technique to label and make fences and signs. After that he started working with the Geographical Limits Commission of the Dominican Republic (now the Military Cartographic Institute) where Oviedo developed first geographical maps of the Dominican territory completely by hand.
His first individual exhibition took place in 1966 at Andrés Santo Domingo Art Gallery, Dominican Republic. Since then he regularly exhibited at various galleries in the Dominican Republic and abroad.
In 2012 Oviedo presented at the Shanell Art Gallery his exhibition entitled "ExhiVision Enigma". His last exhibition took place 2 years later, in 2014, at the Cultural Center Mirador de Santo Domingo where Ramon Oviedo's works were presented alongside with works from the collection of Fernando Baez Guerrero.
Ramon Oviedo died on July 12, 2015 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Ramon Oviedo received a number of awards and prizes during his artistic career. Among them were the First Prize at the E León Jiménez contest in 1969 and 1970 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; a prize at the Sao Paolo Biennal in Brazil in 1972; and the First Prize of Honour at the Biennial of Plastic Arts at Modern Art Gallery in 1974 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Besides, he was included in the palette of Honour by the ArawaK Art Gallery in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This "award" was instituted by this Gallery in a special way to award the Artist for the Greatest Projection of the Year.
Oviedo was named the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Ministry of Culture and Communication of the French Government in Paris, France. He was also titled an honorary professor in 1994 in the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
In 1997 he received the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sánchez and Mella from the National Congress of the Dominican Republic in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The same year he was granted the title of "Illustrious Master of Dominican Painting" by the National Congress of the Dominican Republic.
Oviedo also received the decoration of the Ministry of Culture and Communication of the French Government as "Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters" in 2002. Moreover, in 2010, he was awarded the Medal of Merit for Arts and Letters by the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic. Ramon Oviedo also won the 2013 National Plastic Arts Award from the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic.
Since childhood Oviedo interested in architecture, engineering and art. He inherited from his father the generosity and humility that has always characterized him.

Ramon Oviedo married on December 24, 1945, with Guillermina Colon Montalvo, with whom he had seven children; Rafael Euclides, Ramón Antonio, Aracelis Margarita, Carlos Leonardo, Mayra Yanira, Tamara del Rosario and Raúl Antonio Oviedo Colon.
Later, he divorced and married his second wife, Fedora Velázquez, with whom he did not have children. That relationship with Fedora, his beloved great muse, occurred in the most productive stage of Oviedo, and lasted from the year 1956 until his divorce in the month of February 2014, that was all his creative life, about 58 years of the marriage union.
Ramon Oviedo lived all his life linked to his children and grandchildren and died in the city of Santo Domingo surrounded by them.
