Background
Rangu was born in 1693. He was the youngest son of Jinsai and originally named Choken. Lost his father while still a child and was cared for by his elder brother, Togai.

Education
Rangu entered the service of Wakayama dan and was placed in charge of education (1731).
Career
Six years later when his elder brother died Rangu returned to Kyoto and resumed teaching.
