Ralhan was born on April 28, 1955 in New Delhi, Delhi, India; the daughter of Jagdish Chander Kapoor and Swaran Kanta Kapoor.

Ralhan received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Delhi in 1974. Two years later she earned her Master of Science degree from Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. Also in 1980, Ranju was given a Ph.D. at Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute.
Ralhan began her career as a senior research fellow at Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute in 1976. Four years later she took a position of a postdoctoral fellow at Cancer Research Institute, where she worked until 1981. In 1982, Ranju became a research officer at National Institute of Immunology. Then in 1984, she was appointed Fogarty Postdoctoral Fellow at National Cancer Institute.
In 1987, Ralhan held the position of an assistant professor of the Department of Biochemistry at All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Also she served as an associate professor at that institute from 1991 to 1995. In 1995, Ranjue became an additional professor at All India Institute of Medical Sciences. From 2003 she was a professor at the same institute. Nowadays Ranju is a professor of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Toronto.
Ralhan is a member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, American Association for Cancer Research, New York Academy of Sciences, Indian Association for Cancer Research, Indian Society of Cell Biology, Indian Immunology Society, Association of Clinical Biochemists of India and Biotechnology Society of India.
On February 10, 1980 Ranju Ralhan married Parmod Ralhan. They have two children.
