Ransui Tamura was born in 1718 Tokyo, Japan. He was the son of Munenobu Sakagami, a physician of Tokyo.
Originally a physician of the Chinese school of medicine he studied botany under Sho-o Abe.
He was appointed official physician to the Shogunate (1763) and traveled throughout the country to collect rare herbs. He improved the method of extracting essence from ginsen. In his pursuit of knowledge he even went to the extent of eating poisonous insects and herbs. Among his works are "Secrets of Manufacturing Extract of Ginsen" and "Cultivation of Ginsen''.
