Ray Hudson Bass was born on June 24, 1936, in Watertown, Tennessee, United States, to Aaron Bass and Ellen Frances (Hudson) Bass. He was the eldest of three brothers and spent his early years in Wilson County, attending Watertown High School. Raised in a close-knit family, he developed early interests in community life, faith, and practical craftsmanship, which would later inform both his career and civic commitments.
Bass received his early and secondary education in Watertown, Tennessee.
Bass began his professional career in Nashville, Tennessee, joining the Auto Glass Employee Federal Credit Union in 1959 as manager. He served in that position for over two decades, guiding the institution through periods of steady growth and financial development. In 1980 he became president of the credit union, a role he fulfilled with distinction and stability.
In 1978–1979 he served as chairman of the Tennessee Credit Union League in Chattanooga, contributing to statewide financial service initiatives.
Alongside his core profession, Bass worked across multiple fields during his life, including banking, accounting, real estate, and manufacturing, reflecting a diverse skill set and a sustained commitment to practical service.
Bass was recognized as a noteworthy credit union administrator for his leadership in financial services. He also served as president of the Dodson & Andrew Jackson Parent-Teachers Association in Hermitage, contributing significantly to local educational support initiatives. His work in civic organizations and his long-term role in church missions further distinguished him as a figure of community influence in Middle Tennessee.

Bass married Billie Loretta Willoughby on May 7, 1956, with whom he had two children, Amanda Rachelle and Kevin Ray. After her passing in 2003, he later married Bonnie Bass, with whom he shared nearly twenty years of marriage. He was also a stepfather to Ricky Roberts and Lorianne Proffitt and had numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
