Views

During my service in the Federal Government, I was concerned mainly with securities markets (1934-1941), with war finance (1942-1945), and with the German currency reform (1946). Since 1948 I have concentrated on statistical and institutional aspects of financial institutions, saving, capital stock and national balance sheets, first for the United States, but from the 1960s on an international comparative basis. In these fields I regard as my main innovations (1) the estimation of saving by forms.

(2) the development of the perpetual inventory method of estimating capital stocks as cumulated price-adjusted Netto investment, first applied to the United States but then to many other countries. And (3) the introduction of the financial interrelations ratio (financial assets/tangible assets), the financial intermediation ratio (assets of financial institutions/ total financial assets) and the development of formulas which identify the main determinants of the financial interrelations ratio.
