Razan Hayashi was born in 1583.
He first studied Buddhist under Priest Kojun at the Kenninji Temple in Kyoto. But after he met Seika Fujiwara, the great Confucian (1604), he was overwhelmed by his personality and studied Confucian classics under him.
He was received in audience by Shogun Ieyasu Toku-gawa and was appointed an adviser to the Shogunate (1605). Served three more Shogun - Hidetada, Iemitsu and Ietsuna - and promoted learning. He drafted the Code for samurai of the Tokugawa Shogunate and served also as judge.
He was given a fief of 910 koku of rice a year. He died of illness occasioned by grief over the loss of most of his manuscripts in the great fire of Edo (1657).
