(Embodied Voices explores cultural manifestations of femin...)
Embodied Voices explores cultural manifestations of feminine vocality in the light of current theories of subjectivity, the body, and sexual difference. The voice has been endlessly fascinating to artists and critics, yet it is the voices of women that have inspired the greatest fascination, because the female voice signifies sexual and cultural power. The fourteen essays in this book examine a wide spectrum of discourses, including myth, literature, music, film, psychoanalysis and critical theory.

(Names such as Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, and Sam Sp...)
Names such as Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, and Sam Spade are perhaps better known than the names of the authors who created them. The woman detective has also had worldwide appeal; yet, with the exception of Christie's Miss Marple, the names of female detectives and their authors have only recently gained wide attention through the popularity of Marcia Muller, Sue Grafton, and Sara Paretsky.

(The Diva's Mouth: Bodies, Voice, and Prima Donna Politics...)
The Diva's Mouth: Bodies, Voice, and Prima Donna Politics examines how and why, from the eighteenth century to the present, divas have been talked about with so much passion and written up, down, and over with so much ambiguity and contradiction. The book explores the myriad roles the diva plays in masculinist, feminist, and queer imaginations - in opera itself and in other fictions, films, and fantasies, including the divas' (and the authors') own.
