Daehlin obtained his bachelor’s degree at Concordia College in 1932, his bachelor of theology degree at Luther Theological Seminary in 1935, and his Master of Sacred Theology degree from Union Theology Seminary in 1942. He also received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Concordia in 1954.
Daehlin began his missionary service in China for the Lutheran Church from 1935 to 1950, leaving when the Communists took over. He then served as a Lutheran pastor in Montana and Brooklyn, becoming president of the Rocky Mountain District of the American Lutheran Church in 1953.
His first book, Pastor to Pastor, was published in 1966 by Augsburg. A second and final work, The Family of the Forgiven, was issued in 1973 by Concordia Publishing House.
Daehlin spoke Norwegian, Danish, and Chinese, and could read works in Swedish and German.
