Dahan began his career as a process technician at ExxonMobil Corporation in 1963. Ten years later he took the position of a manager at the same corporation. Then in 1974, Rene became a manager of the refining department at ExxonMobil Corporation. Also he served as Head of Corporation Planning Division at ExxonMobil Europe from 1977 to 1978. In 1978, Rene became a manager of a natural gas department at that corporation.
In 1981, he was appointed a deputy manager of the petroleum products department at ExxonMobil Corporation. Two years later Dahan held the position of an executive vice president at Esso Nederland B.V. In 1985, he became President and Chief Executive Officer at the same company, where he worked until 1991.
In 1990, he was transferred to New Jersey and was appointed in 1992, as President of Exxon Company International responsible for all Exxon businesses outside North America. In addition, in 1998, Rene took the position of Director of Exxon corporation in Dallas with responsibility for the worldwide downstream and chemical business. In 1999, he was named Executive Vice President of ExxonMobil Corporation, where he served until his retirement in 2002.
Between 2002 and 2009, Dahan served as a director in the Supervisory Boards of VNU N.V., TNT N.V. and Aegon N.V. and the Advisory Boards of CVC and the Guggenheim group in New York. He was appointed the director of Repsol at the Annual General Meeting held on May 31, 2013 and reelected at the Annual General Meeting on May 19, 2017. He resides in Ascot, England.
Rene Dahan is a member of the International Advisory Board of IE Business School and president of the Dahan Family Foundation. Since 2016 he has been a chairman of the Supervisory Board of the company NRGV Retail Nederland B.V.
